If the memorial complex on Mamayev Kurgan is known all over the world, the complex of monuments «The Defense Line of the Battle of Stalingrad» is less known, although it is no less important in its significance.
This complex is unique in its kind and consists of 17 tank towers, erected on granite pedestals, located in 4 districts of Volgograd. At first glance, the towers are in a chaotic state. But this is only at first glance.
All of them are installed directly on the line of defense of Stalingrad in November 1942 by the troops of the 62nd and 64th armies and show the maximum approach of the enemy to the city.
The total length of the complex is about 30 -th km.
The idea to recreate and perpetuate the front line of the defense of Stalingrad came to the mind of the Moscow architect Fyodor Lysov in February 1948, on the eve of the 5th anniversary of the defeat of the Nazi troops at Stalingrad.

The first tower was installed on September 3, 1951, the last three years later, on October 17 1954.
Some of them, such as the tower on Marshal Chuikov Street, are located so close to the Volga that you begin to understand how far the enemy managed to penetrate the city.
It is also noteworthy that the tank turrets are not fake, almost every one of them has holes from enemy shells. The towers were removed from the destroyed tanks that took part in the Battle of Stalingrad, which, unfortunately, remained in large numbers on the battlefield. Someones life is behind each of them.

Now it is no longer possible to establish for certain the names of the crews of these destroyed tanks, but I believe that the souls of those killed soldiers still live in these towers, reminding us at what cost this Victory!
