Winters on the Lower Volga have recently become so unpredictable, that it is not clear to get rubber boots or felt boots out of the closet. Rain on the New Year has become so commonplace that almost no one is surprised. And the fierce Epiphany frosts — you can no longer call them frosts. They more and more resemble a slight cold snap. Pampering, in a word.

So Mother Volga, in its lower reaches, has ceased to freeze. And as the old-timers say, there were times when on the ice it was possible to safely go from the right bank of the river to the left, and nothing!

Now Volga does not freeze at all, as if it is not winter outside, but some kind of eternal off-season.

And then it somehow happened that the air temperature on the street dropped sharply to -15 ° C and lasted at this mark for at least a week, which was enough for the Volga to get up. Well, or almost got up.

And when the frosts slept a little, I immediately rushed to the Volga to see the ice on it with my own eyes surface.

Imagine my surprise when, instead of the frozen Volga, I saw a real ice drift! Although it could hardly be called ice drift.

Ice floated along the Volga in large, in some cases, huge ice floes. And if in the middle of the river there was enough space for ice floes, then closer to the coast, they bumped into each other, emitting a resounding ice grinding.

Partly I was lucky, because before that I had never seen a real ice drift, but here such luck! And those who say that you can endlessly look only at fire and water are wrong. I would also add ice drift to this list.

For a moment it even seemed to me that the ice drift had hypnotized me, not giving the slightest chance to look away from him. There was some kind of mysterious magic in this natural phenomenon …
