On the eve of celebrating the 78th anniversary of the victory of Soviet troops at Stalingrad, I managed to visit the basement of the building of the former Stalingrad department store, where on January 31, 1943 I was the commander of the 6th field German army Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus was captured together with his headquarters. Now it houses the Memory Museum.
According to one of the employees of the museum, this seemingly well-known event has been rewritten several times already at the present time. And even the very place of the capture of the field marshal is still disputed. So, in particular, according to one version, it is argued that the field marshal was not captured at all in the basement of the department store, but in the neighboring building, where the Stalingrad executive committee was located.
Plus, even living witnesses of those events, veterans of the Great Patriotic War, have repeatedly changed their point of view on the composition of the participants in that operation, because all the time more and more new witnesses appeared.
Fortunately, at present, the timing of Pauluss capture itself has been restored almost minute by minute and all its members.

On the morning of January 31, exactly the day after Paulus was promoted to field marshal, he conveyed a request for surrender to the Soviet troops through his staff officers.
It so happened that the fighters of the 38th motorized rifle brigade headed by Senior Lieutenant Fedor Ilchenko stumbled upon Paulusenvoys. However, the Germans refused to negotiate with Ilchenko and demanded, if I can put it that way, representatives of a higher rank from among the Soviet front-line command. Here are the impudent ones!

Lieutenant Colonel Vinokur negotiated with the commander of the 71st Infantry Division, Major General Fritz Roske. Paulus, not wishing to be formally involved in the surrender, or maybe because of his depressed state, shifted the negotiations to Roska and his chief of staff, General Arthur Schmidt.
