I visited the Mamayev Kurgan right after the celebration of the 78th anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad. This is what I saw there

This year the celebration of the 78th anniversary of the Victory at Stalingrad was celebrated in Volgograd more modestly than usual. Moreover, almost all events related to this date were almost classified as «top secret». The list of events was, but the time of their holding is not known. Therefore, Volgograd residents and guests of the city learned about them almost after the fact.

Moreover, to completely confuse the citizens, the city authorities appointed events then canceled them. This, in particular, happened with the annual installation of the capture of Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus in the basement of the Stalingrad Central Department Store.

Obviously, this was due to the epidemiological situation in the city and the region, where the daily number of infected people has not dropped below 250 people per day for a long time.

To be honest, I never got to any event, so I decided to go to Mamayev Kurgan hoping to catch something.

There, along the Alley of Pyramidal Poplars, red banners traditionally stood on watch. It looked very solemn and impressive.

I hardly saw flowers on Mamayev Kurgan, and I myself came without them. Although practically on every gravestone located along the path leading to the foot of the monument «Motherland Calls» there were two or four carnations.

The grave of Colonel General Mikhail Stepanovich Shumilov, commander of the 64th Army who fought in Stalingrad, was no exception.

But what I saw at the grave of Marshal of the Soviet Union Vasily Ivanovich Chuikov touched me to the depths of my soul.

The headstone was almost completely covered with carnations, and there was a huge basket of roses at the head of Marshal.

I think that by the end of the day, despite the rare visitors, the number of carnations on the marshals grave only increased.

As you know, Vasily Ivanovich Chuikov was buried on the land of Mamaev Kurgan according to his personal will.
