The name of the Guard Lieutenant Afanasyev, under whose leadership the defense of the world famous house of Sergeant Pavlov in Stalingrad (Volgograd since 1961), was forgotten for a long time. One of the houses on Penzenskaya street, which was taken from the Germans by the guard sergeant Yakov Pavlov, who was at the head of the sabotage group , was no exception in this regard.
The seizure of a house on Penzenskaya Street was recorded by one of the journalists and hit the pages of front-line publications. And after the war, Yakov Pavlov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union for this feat, and the house was named in his honor.

And now the initiative group, consisting of historians, scientists and simply not indifferent people, asked the head of Volgograd to assign the nameless square on Lenin Square, directly adjacent to Pavlov's house, the name of the guard lieutenant Ivan Afanasyev.
