Most of the Marshals of the Soviet Union who passed the Great Patriotic War war, buried in Moscow. But there is one among them, who in his will named the place of his burial Mamayev Kurgan in the city of Volgograd (from 1925 to 1961 — Stalingrad). The name of this Marshal is Chuikov Vasily Ivanovich .

On May 4, 1970, for a huge contribution to the victory at Stalingrad, the Volgograd City Council of Working People's Deputies appropriated V.I. Chuikov the title of «Honorary Citizen of the Hero City of Volgograd.» points = «6»> Marshal Chuikov retired in 1972, but even after that he often visited the troops, including his native 8th Army (after the Battle of Stalingrad, the 62nd Army was renamed the 8th and received the title of «Guards») …
In July 1981, Vasily Ivanovich wrote a letter to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, of which he was a member since 1961 :
… Feeling the end of my life approaching, I, in full consciousness, make a request: after my death, bury the ashes on the Mamayev Kurgan in Stalingrad, where my command post was organized by me on September 12, 1942. … From that place you can hear the roar of the Volga waters, the volleys of guns and the pain of the Stalingrad ruins, there are buried thousands of soldiers whom I commanded …

Vasily Ivanovich died on March 18, 1982 and was buried under his will on Mamayev Kurgan, at the foot of the monument «Motherland Calls!»
